Touch
Touch
Imagine a drop of water leaves ripples on the quiet water.
That is similar to touch to the display unveils all kinds of feedback
through the sense of touch, vision and hearing.
And that is the final design concept behind Lenny.
All details were begun from the touch of the display.
Leaves the ripple-like keymat detail and the waterfall-like speaker detail.
This final design direction very well presented 2 key selling points.

Trex was a secret project led by Ulm R&D team.
The purpose was to prove the feasibility of Touch within
S40 software and to drive the innovative packaging of this
solution into the smallest and thinnest possible device.
The proof of concept proved that a S40 Touch UI was feasible.

This project is called Lenny.
Picture beside is the very first sketches when we
communicate some basic design concepts.
Some basic agreements we had from the very
beginning, Lenny should be a sleek device (Small,
Thin) with attractive appearance, Lenny should
target €100 price point (street price around €125)
and should implement the study result we had
base on Trex project, also means Lenny will follow
4x3 T9 keymat layout.

User Focus
User Focus
We develop the design to fit into the user segment target
(young-at-heart). Give Lenny a slightly more dynamic feel
by adding a tipper shape to the sides, meaning the bottom
of Lenny would be slightly narrower than the top. Also try to
develop the colour to reflect the dreams, aspirations and
social needs of the target segment. That is the reason we
chose brushed aluminium as the back cover material, which
could give Lenny more vivid colour variants. and enabled
Lenny to launch with five colour options.

Throughout the development process, we employ a variety of
techniques to refine our designs. Hand sketches, along with
2D and 3D rendered images, serve as our primary
communication tools. Additionally, we frequently use 3D print
models to gain a tangible sense of the design's physical
presence. Which have been instrumental in fine-tuning the
proportions and evolving the design language of the keymat
and speaker elements. The progression of 'Lenny' is
particularly evident; it has transformed from a basic form
into a sophisticated design replete with meticulously crafted details.
